Kids love to be in the kitchen. But can kids do more than set the table and do a little stirring of batter? You bet!
With a little help, kids can really get into the work of the kitchen and come out with good results. Maybe not always like Mom, but they are learning.
One good place to start is with a beginners cookbook. Now this cookbook I’m about to tell you is not really elementary as it has recipes for all age groups. Some are easier than others, but it does give suggestions on what children can do and what is more appropriate for adults to do.
This is a cookbook I’ve suggested in the past. It is Amy Houts book called “Cooking Around the Calendar with Kids – Holiday and Seasonal Food and Fun”. It helps them learn to choose, prepare, and serve lots of different kinds of foods. For ages 5-12.

If you have a young child on your Christmas list, here is a book he or she is sure to enjoy. “The Littlest Christmas Kitten” has lots of big, bold pictures of kittens and cats and animals. Of course the emphasis is on the Christ Child because it is His birthday. And birthdays are always special.
Have you noticed that cats are often featured on Christmas cards? There are even cat ornaments. This book gives the reason why there is a close association between cats and Christmas.
Just go to http://www.LittlestChristmasKitten.com and see how this book appeals to young children. It is a good Christmas book you will want to read over and over.
Amazon also has this book. See it at:

The first real snowfall of the season always leaves me looking out the window more than usual. I never tire of seeing it fall in soft mounds. Today it was a lazy snow but enough accummulation that I had to use the snow shovel.
What to cook for the first wintery-looking day? It sounds like a day for a good bowl of soup.
Here is one of my favorites and hope you will like it too:
Cheese-Broccoli Soup
2 tablespoons cooking oil
3/4 cup chopped onion
6 cups water
6 chicken bouillon cubes
8 ounce package very fine noodles
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
1 pound Velveeta cheese
pepper to taste
20 ounce package chopped broccoli
6 cups milk
Saute onion in oil for 3 minutes. Add water to a large pan; add the bouillon cubes so they dissolve in the boiling water. (Be careful around the hot stove, steam and water). Then gradually add noodles and boil uncovered for 4 minutes or until noodles are tender.
Stir in chopped broccoli, salt, garlic salt, and pepper. Cook for 4 minutes. Cut cheese in small pieces and add to noodles and water, then add milk. Reduce heat and stir gently until cheese melts. Do not let soup boil, as the milk will curdle.
It’s been a very busy fall season but I am back in the kitchen. I am getting ready to “cook up a storm” for the Christmas season!
